Author Guidelines


The Journal of the Rutgers University Libraries (JRUL) accepts exclusive submissions of original manuscripts that have not been previously published and are not forthcoming in print or online in a scholarly journal, book, or other publishing format. When submitting, Authors agree not to submit a manuscript for electronic or print publication in another journal until the JRUL decides to accept or reject it, or until the Author withdraws this submission. JRUL does not have article processing charges (APCs) or article submission charges.


Authors own the copyright to their articles. The authors have, however, consented to the following provisions associated with their copyright:

  1. Authors grant the JRUL the right to publish and archive their articles for an unlimited time and to make their articles available to readers (see item 2 below) on the World Wide Web, or through whatever medium the JRUL determines is best to accomplish its purposes, whether the medium is now known or developed in the future.
  2. Authors agree that the JRUL is an open access journal made available by a Creative Commons-Noncommercial- NoDerivitaves License (read the human-readable summary  or the full license legal code). Under this license, authors retain ownership of the copyright for their articles, but authors allow anyone to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute, and/or copy articles in JRUL so long as the original authors and source are cited, the use is noncommercial, and work is unaltered. Permission is required only for commercial or other uses not permitted by the Creative Commons license.
  3. To help maintain the distinctive nature of the JRUL and the tradition of scholarly publications, for one year from the date of initial publication in the JRUL, authors are encouraged not to publish their article in any other scholarly journal, print or online, open access or non-open-access.
  4. Authors agree to let the JRUL use their articles to create compilations for sale that consist of selected articles from the JRUL journal for the sole purpose of financially supporting the continuing publication of the JRUL.
  5. Authors agree to let the JRUL provide articles to document delivery services and abstracting indexing services.


  1. The First Author is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the data, facts, references, and copyediting in his or her submission and for securing co-author agreement to the terms of the JRUL "Copyright" policy above and all other journal policies.
  2. Authors are responsible for obtaining the proper permissions to use material, INCLUDING ALL ILLUSTRATIONS,  in their articles for which they do not own copyright and which is not covered by Fair Use.
  3. All authors warrant that an article contains no material which violates any copyright belonging to any third party, or which is defamatory, an invasion of privacy, or otherwise illegal.
  4. Authors shall indemnify and hold the JRUL, the Rutgers University Libraries, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey harmless from any claims that a manuscript and/or an article infringes a third party's copyright or contains inaccurate, defamatory, or otherwise unlawful material or constitutes an invasion of privacy.

Instructions for Authors

  • Text Area: The text area of the manuscript is 125 mm wide x 190 mm deep. All text, tables and figures must be within this area.
  • Page Extent: There is no page limit and colour figure and photographs are encouraged.
  • Font size: The main text should be set in 10 point Times Roman, using double line spacing. All text should be produced as a single column.
  • Main sections headings should be set in Bold and 12 point Times Roman and the second level headings set in 10 point Times Roman. The Title of the paper should be in 14-point Times Roman.
  • First Page: This page should contain the title of the paper, the author’s names and organisations, the abstract and the first part of the paper (i.e. Introduction). The abstract will consist of less than 200 words.
  • Figures and Tables: Figures and Tables must be numbered sequentially.
    Pages Numbering: Please do not number the pages using the word processor.
  • File Format: Authors should prepare their files in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect or RTF.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published nor is it before another journal for consideration; or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor.
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. All URL addresses in the text (e.g., are activated and ready to click.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); with figures and tables placed within the text, rather than at the end.
  5. The text meets this journal's formatting requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines found in About the Journal. If the journal section is peer reviewed, author identification has been removed, and "Author" and year have been used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of authors' names, titles, etc. The author's name has been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.

Copyright Notice

Copyright for articles published in this journal is retained by the authors, with first publication rights granted to the journal. By virtue of their appearance in this open access journal, articles are free to use, with proper attribution, in educational and other non-commercial settings. The author has agreed to the journal author's agreement.
